The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a non-profit professional society whose mission is to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources, and related technologies for the public benefit; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence.
The SPE Alaska Section is made up of more than 500 petroleum professionals represented by nearly 70 companies from across Alaska. The Alaska Section sponsors monthly technical presentations open to the public, various technical short courses, and is active in efforts to make young Alaskans aware of the world of science and engineering.
The SPE Alaska Section sponsors an Engineering Explorers program for Anchorage-area high school students interested in math and science, and supports a SPE student chapter at UAF, providing them with industry speakers and transportation to SPE meetings. SPE also sponsors a scholarship program for high school and college students pursuing an area of study that could lead to a career in the oil and gas industry. In the past five years, SPE Alaska Section has awarded $135,000 in scholarships to over 100 deserving college and high school students from Ketchikan to Nome pursuing degrees in engineering and earth sciences.
SPE Awards: Five $100 cash awards will be given at each level for a project that best presents an investigation of energy resources. Preference will be given to oil- and gas-related projects.
